‘Inheritance Tax (IHT) changes create ‘serious challenges’ for thousands of retirement savers’

In the run-up to the Autumn Budget last year, there was a lot of speculation about the incoming Labour government and the changes they might make to taxation. This was a continuation of the impact under the previous Conservative Government, where the increasing cost of services, including the cost of the national debt, meant that additional income was needed. Facing a £6.25 billion fiscal shortfall, Chancellor Reeves may freeze income tax thresholds until 2030 (raising £9.2 billion), cut cash ISA limits, and reform pension tax relief (currently costing £42.5 billion), possibly switching to flat 30% relief. A hike in corporation tax or wealth tax remains under debate. Equity markets and retirement savers could see lasting consequences.
