Verify your identity with Companies House

As part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, from 18 November 2025, the way UK companies operate will change significantly. For the first time, all Company Directors, including Limited Liability Partnership Members and people with significant control (PSCs) will be required to verify their identities with Companies House.

At first glance, this might seem like just another piece of compliance. But in reality, it’s much more than that. It marks an important and fundamental shift towards greater trust, transparency, and accountability in UK business.

Why identity verification matters

For years, concerns have been raised about the accuracy of records held at Companies House and the potential misuse of UK companies for fraudulent or criminal purposes. When anyone can set up a company with little scrutiny, it creates opportunities for abuse.

By requiring Directors and PSCs to prove who they are, Companies House is sending a powerful message: our company register should reflect real people, taking real responsibility.

This change will:

  • Enhance the credibility of UK businesses on the global stage.
  • Build trust between companies, investors, and consumers.
  • Offer protection against identity misuse and corporate fraud.

In short, the government see this as a safeguard not only for the economy but also for individual businesses of all sizes, with failing to verify being considered as a criminal offence.

The scale of the change

An estimated 6 to 7 million individuals will need to verify their identities by November 2026. New Directors will not be able to take up positions without verification, and existing Directors and PSCs will need to confirm their status during a phased 12-month transition.

For most people, the process will be quick and straightforward — a one-off task completed in minutes via GOV.UK One Login or through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) such as Old Mill.
